COURSE OVERVIEW
UNIT 1
Baby Physiology For Photographers
This unit is designed to equip the learner with the knowledge and skills to feel comfortable settling and handling a baby for the purposes of taking a photographic portrait. It deals with aspects of physiology at different stages of a baby’s development, what the risk factors are when working with a baby subject and what their stage of development means in terms of their capability for a portrait pose. Learners are also given an understanding of their Duty of Care for the baby they are photographing and the recommended course of action that they should take when they spot something of concern. They will be given the opportunity to role play different Duty of Care scenarios to build their confidence in dealing with a ‘live’ situation or issue.

UNIT 2
Prepare For A Photography Session With A Baby
This unit is designed to enable the candidate to prepare and consult with their potential clients, with regards to a newborn baby and older baby portrait session. In this consultation the candidate will be able to communicate all the requirements needed with the parent, ensuring the session will be safe and successful. On completion of the unit the candidate will be able to understand the importance of this initial consultation, resulting in a more successful session.

UNIT 3
Position A Baby For A Photography Session
This unit is designed to enable candidates position babies in a safe environment. The candidate will position the baby for flow posing, work with props, use wraps with babies and position the baby with family and/or siblings. The tutor will demonstrate these skills and the candidate will be expected to absorb the information and position their own baby subjects incorporating the information taught by the tutor. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate skills and techniques in a professional manner.

UNIT 4
Use Lighting Techniques To Create A Photographic Image Of A Baby
This unit is designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and skills required to create images of babies in a safe environment. The candidate will display the use of different lighting techniques when creating a photographic image. The tutor will demonstrate these skills and the candidate will be expected to absorb the information and produce their own images incorporating the information taught by the tutor. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate skills and techniques in a professional manner.

UNIT 5
Produce A Photographic Portrait Of A Baby
This unit is designed to enable candidates create images of babies in a safe environment. The candidate will produce unedited/’raw’ images and create composite images. The tutor will demonstrate these skills and the candidate will be expected to absorb the information and produce their own images incorporating the information taught by the tutor. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate skills and techniques in a professional manner.

UNIT 6
Use Editing Techniques To Enhance The Quality Of An Image
This unit is designed to provide the candidate with the knowledge and skills to be able to enhance their photographic image using digital editing software and techniques. They will prepare their image for editing by downloading it in a suitable format and then use a variety of different photo-editing techniques to manipulate the image so that the baby subject can be presented in the best way possible.
